The Lutherhaus Eisenach
Authentic Luther Site, Unique Cultural Heritage and Innovative Museum
Welcome! The Lutherhaus Eisenach is one of Eisenach’s best known and most popular attractions. It memorializes Martin Luther’s sojourn in Eisenach from 1498 to 1501 during his schooldays and has been regarded as a major site of Reformation history since the early nineteenth century. Fully redesigned in 2015, the museum hosts contemporary exhibitions in a unique historical ambience. The Lutherhaus is not only the perfect addition to a visit to Wartburg Castle but also offers a wealth of historical treasures and surprising insights.
Explore one of Thuringia’s oldest and loveliest half-timbered houses in Martin Luther’s footsteps. Experience the historic charm of this unique European cultural heritage and learn more about Luther’s famous translation of the Bible in our award-winning permanent exhibition. Look forward to a state-of-the-art cultural treat, multimedia exhibitions and a well-stocked museum shop.
The Lutherhaus Eisenach is showing its permanent exhibition „Luther and the Bible“ about Martin Luther’s historic translation of the Bible, which was revised and updated in 2022, and its compelling exhibition about the church’s “Dejudaization Institute” during the Nazi era. These exhibitions can be seen together or separately.
The Lutherhaus has had an exceptional work of contemporary art – the impressive sculpture "man in a cube" by Ai Weiwei – on display since 2020, making it one of the few museums in Germany with a work by this acclaimed Chinese artist on permanent display.
The well-stocked museum shop Lutherhaus Eisenach is open for browsing and shopping: You will find books, postcards and souvenirs as well as Bibles and scholarly literature there. Incidentally, we are also an authorized dealer of original Herrnhut (Moravian) Stars!
Anyone who would like to print a page of the Luther Bible on a Gutenberg press and discover other creative programs is in the right place with us: “Luther’s Workshop” at the Lutherhaus Eisenach offers numerous programs for children, young people and adults!
Sustainable and wheelchair accessible: Our exhibition galleries and our museum shop are wheelchair accessible for visitors with limited mobility. Operating resource-efficiently is also a top priority for us. And we are constantly continuing to work on treating people and the environment more responsibly.
